European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge stated the action was “another example” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
