The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but inside Together exists a profound contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when the couple transition from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
