At least 35,000 applicants could be compromised, cautions the United States embassy

A major data breach in the Federal Republic of Somalia's digital visa application system may have exposed sensitive details associated with numerous thousands of travelers, involving American nationals, the American embassy in Somalia has warned.

It said gathered credible reports that "unknown cyber attackers" had penetrated the Somali government's electronic visa system, likely endangering data from approximately 35,000 individuals.

The compromised files circulating online comprise personal identifiers, photographs, dates of birth, marital status, place of residence and email information, according to a United States official announcement released on last Thursday.

"This security incident remains active and potentially disclose all private information provided to the system," the UK has similarly alerted visitors.

"Assess the potential threats when considering application for an electronic visa mandatory for entry into Somalia."

Official Reaction

Somali authorities have not issued statements on the breach. However authorities has shifted its visa service from the previous platform the original e-visa website toward the new application website, without providing an official explanation.

"Even though the US Embassy in Mogadishu cannot verify if personal information is part of the security incident, travelers who have requested visas via the digital application platform may be affected," the official communication declared.

Regional Implications

The updated visa process necessitates every visitor, including those from the autonomous region of the breakaway region and the partially independent area of the northeastern region, to seek admission permits through digital means.

Critics say visitors have encountered extra fees in certain regions, totaling double charges.

Regional Dynamics

Somaliland, that announced sovereignty in three decades ago, manages its territory via separate governmental bodies but has not been worldwide acceptance. Mogadishu authorities asserts that the region continues to belong to its jurisdictional area.

The alleged breach adds to ongoing disputes concerning Mogadishu and Somaliland administration over control of national air territory. Although Mogadishu re-established complete authority of national aviation space in recent years, Hargeisa administration continues to contest the arrangement.

Current Developments

The disagreement worsened in recent days as Somaliland's President the Somaliland president announced the breakaway region would not accept Somalia's e-visa and directed that carriers are required to secure permission from northern authorities prior to accessing its airspace.

Nevertheless prominent aviation companies have chosen not to accept travelers without Somalia's e-visa approval.

On Saturday, the northern region's top diplomat the foreign minister again insisted that "every person entering the breakaway region can acquire their visa on arrival", saying Somalia's e-visa system lacked security and warning that "people's data could be accessed by radical elements" as a result of utilizing the system.

Travel Disruptions

The stand-off has caused numerous passengers traveling to Somaliland stuck in transit hubs after being denied boarding because they didn't have Mogadishu's digital permit.

Hargeisa's air transport representative, the transport official, has told media outlets that the regulations - originally publicized earlier this year - came into effect on November 10th.

The minister stated companies that ignore might be directed to divert, and claimed numerous flights had already been rerouted.

Jurisdictional Battle

Video evidence distributed by Somaliland's aviation ministry reportedly displays territorial flight directors issuing instructions to foreign aircraft commanders - an action hailed internally as an assertion of the region's independence.

However Mogadishu's air transport department insists it retains sole administrative and legal control concerning the federal aviation control area (FIR), encompassing all territorial skies. Officials have directed all aircraft to ignore any guidance issued by authorities other than federal authorities.

Authorities alerted that failing to comply with Somali and international aviation rules could generate aviation dangers and lead to "serious legal consequences".
