Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the option to challenge particular decisions from the official, mirroring the system already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
